The UK government has appointed Blaise Metreweli as its first female head of the M16 spy service. The country is facing threats on an unprecedented scale, according to Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He announced on Sunday that the M16 Secret Intelligence Service achieved a global reputation through Ian Fleming’s fictional agent James Bond.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Downing Street office said in a statement that Matreweli will be the 18th head of the M16 spy service.
Starmer said that the historic appointment of Blaise Matreweli took place at a time when the work of their intelligence services had never been more vital. He added that the UK is facing threats on an unprecedented scale, and it could be aggressors who send their spy ships into their waters. It could be the hackers whose sophisticated cyber plots could disrupt the UK’s public services.
M16 appoints first female chief in its 116-year history, Ms Matreweli steps from the shadows into the light as the only member whose name becomes public. The M16 head is the only publicly named member of the spy service and reports directly to the foreign minister. The member in that post is referred to as “C ” in the James Bond franchise. Matreweli will take over the charges of the M16 from Richard Moore in the autumn.
Blaise Matreweli is presently M16’s head of technology. She has served in the Middle East and Europe. Matreweli said that she is proud and honoured to be asked to lead her service. Matreweli is undertaking one of the most powerful jobs in Western Intelligence.
The M16 spy service was founded in 1909, and later it merged with other main British spy agencies, such as M15.
Prime Minister Keir declared that he knows Blaise will continue to provide the excellent leadership needed to defend their country.
Matreweli’s’ biggest challenges seem to be dealing with Russia, China, and Iran. These nations unite ever more closely to undermine the UK. M16’s role is to hire human agents to steal the secrets of Britain’s advisers, including both hostile nations and non-state groups like al-Qaeda.
Matreweli studied anthropology at the University of Cambridge and has previously held director-level positions in M15 and M16 security agencies.
On Sunday, Sir Richard, who will step down in the M16’s chief role, said that he was absolutely delighted by this historic appointment. He added that Blaise is a highly accomplished, intelligent officer and leader. She is one of their foremost thinkers on technology. He also said that he is excited to welcome his colleagues as the first female head of M16.
