6 cheap ways to travel to Europe

A trip Europe It can be expensive. Airline tickets, high-speed trains, overnight stays, ferries – they all eat up your limited (and precious) travel budget.

Fortunately, there are many ways to get around Europe on a budget. the Sharing economyNew bus options, Exit on the train corridorMany budget airlines help you get around Europe without spending a lot of money.

I have been traveling through Europe since 2006 and have witnessed a lot of change during that time. Although the coronavirus has affected things, I can honestly say that getting around Europe has never been easier because there are so many new, cheap ways to travel on the continent.

Here are the best ways to travel Europe on a budget:

1. Travel by bus

Taking intercity buses is one of the cheapest ways to get around the continent. The main international bus companies are Germany-based Eurolines Flex bus, which expanded significantly when it acquired Megabus and now has routes across the continent.

Flixbus is usually the cheapest bus option, with fares starting at €5. Their buses include Wi-Fi, electrical outlets, free luggage (one carry-on and a suitcase stored under the bus), and comfortable seating. (Megabus still operates in the UK.)

FlixBus has quickly become my favorite way other than trains to get around Europe on the cheap. It's not luxurious by any means, but it is the cheapest way to get around. They are mostly European. Here is a map of their routes to help you plan your trip!

However, there are many other regionally specific bus companies that will take you elsewhere. For example, Alsa is the leading supplier in Spain and its neighboring countries.

You can use BusRadar to Come by bus To find the cheapest and fastest option on your desired route.

2. Travel on a budget airline

By far, one of the cheapest ways to travel long distances in Europe is via budget airlines. These airlines are very productive on the continent and the competition has resulted in incredibly cheap prices. It's not unusual to find flights for less than €10! I use Sky Scanner To search for the best offers. They do all the work!

Just remember that budget airlines make most of their money through fees. They are very strict about baggage limits or will tap you if you forget to print your boarding pass. Also, don't expect any free drinks or meals. But if you follow the rules and know what to expect, you can save a lot of money!

3. Travel with a Eurail card

I love traveling by train: sitting on a big bench, relaxing with a book and watching the beautiful scenery. It is more comfortable than the bus and much less stressful (and... More sustainable) such as air travel. The European railway system is one of the best and most comprehensive in the world.

If you're traveling by train, they're hard to beat for price and comfort on short trips from one city to another. For long flights (overnight flights, between countries, or flights that require a high-speed line, e.g Paris on Bordeaux to Berlin on Munich), trains can get expensive.

If you are planning to travel through Europe and do not want to travel by plane, To get a train ticket It is the best travel option to save money. The cost of the trip will be much lower than if you purchased these tickets separately.

Not sure if it is Eurail Is it suitable for you? Here are full details on Eurail cards and when to use them to save money.

4. Travel with BlaBlaCar

It is very popular and widespread in Europe and I have used this service many times. Allows you to share with people who have extra space in their car. You get a ride, they agree to take you, and off you go. Prices are set by the driver and are intended to offset the cost of gas and general wear and tear on the vehicle.

It's the best paid way to get around Europe because you can meet a local, have a friendly conversation, save money and get to your destination faster. It is available in nearly 20 countries in Europe.

Although BlaBlaCar may not always be cheaper than a bus (FlixBus can be very cheap!), it is usually much faster and more interesting!

5. Traveling by rented car/van

If you're traveling across a single country or small region in Europe and are looking for flexibility, renting a car or campervan may be worth the price – especially if you can split the cost with someone. Cars can be rented for €25 per day, but keep in mind that gas is expensive. To get the best deals for car rental in Europe, use Discover cars.

Caravans are especially popular in countries such as Island, Scotland, in Norway These destinations provide plenty of hiking and camping opportunities. You can get campervans for as little as €60 per day – very affordable if shared with a travel partner considering that accommodation is included too! Use the 'park4night' app to find free (and cheap) overnight parking all over Europe.

Mind you: Many countries in Europe require foreign drivers to have an international driving permit. You can get one in your home country before your arrival for about 20 euros. (This is basically just a copy of your license in other languages). Also keep in mind that renting an automatic transmission versus a standard transmission will typically cost twice as much.

6. Free delivery cost

Drop-offs are very popular – and safer than you think. I have met many travelers who have done this without incident. I've traveled this way myself Bulgaria in Island Without any problems.

Just keep in mind that it is important to use your head while driving. Always trust your instincts and use common sense. Keep your valuables with you in case you forget your bag in the car and never hesitate to text a friend or family member with your license plate before getting into the car. Write your destination on the board and look good. This will help you find a flight faster.

The best and cheapest way to travel to Europe? Mix and match your means of transportation

As you can see, there are many ways to get around Europe on a budget. But the best way is to mix and match your transportation depending on where you're going and how long it will take. For short trips I like trains and BlaBlaCar. For medium-length trips (i.e. half a day), I'll take the bus, BlaBlaBla car, or train. For long distances I travel by plane, take a high-speed train or a night bus.

Many travelers think it's all or nothing. As one method is always better than the other. This is not true. There is no way to travel across Europe. There are a lot of them, and you have to know when to use which method to use.

If you have more time, take the slower and cheaper routes.

If you have more money and a shorter trip, fly and take the train.

If you have no preference on how you travel - and just want the cheapest option (which I usually do) - use a site like Rome2Rio to Umeo. All you have to do is enter where you are going and these sites will combine different ways to get to the continent for the least amount of money. They will collaborate with buses, trains and planes to build the fastest journey for the least amount of money.

Remember: No method works 100% of the time. Mix and match. Do this and you will save a lot of time and money!
